You will be responsible for coordinating temporary accommodation placements, managing bookings and maintaining accurate financial and occupancy records, while working closely with accommodation providers, residents and colleagues across the Council.
The role is varied and fast-paced, requiring excellent organisational skills, attention to detail and the ability to manage competing priorities while delivering a high standard of customer service.
As a Temporary Accommodation Officer, you will:

Manage accommodation bookings, placements and void properties, ensuring efficient use of available accommodation.
Undertake property inspections to ensure accommodation meets required safety, suitability and housing standards.
Maintain accurate placement records, rent accounts and financial information.
Work closely with Housing Benefit colleagues to ensure claims are submitted promptly, maximising income and minimising arrears.
Process and reconcile invoices, purchase orders and payments, resolving discrepancies with accommodation providers.
Monitor rent and service charge accounts, taking appropriate action to prevent and address arrears.
Build and maintain effective working relationships with landlords, accommodation providers, residents and internal teams.
Respond to enquiries, resolve issues and support residents throughout their temporary accommodation placements.
Contribute to service improvements, performance monitoring and the effective management of temporary accommodation costs.
We are looking for someone who is confident, adaptable and able to work effectively in a busy and demanding environment.
You will have experience of working in housing, temporary accommodation or a related local authority environment, alongside an understanding of the challenges faced by households experiencing homelessness.
You will also demonstrate:
Strong organisational, communication and problem-solving skills.
Knowledge of homelessness legislation, temporary accommodation responsibilities and relevant property safety standards.
An understanding of Housing Benefit, Universal Credit housing costs, rent accounts and arrears management.
Experience of financial administration, processing payments or reconciling accounts with a high level of accuracy.
The ability to manage competing priorities, meet deadlines and work independently.
Confidence in dealing with residents, landlords and accommodation providers, including managing challenging situations professionally.
Good IT skills, attention to detail and the ability to maintain accurate records.
A commitment to safeguarding, equality and delivering excellent customer service.
At Merton, you will be part of a dedicated team working to support residents facing homelessness and housing difficulties.
You will have the opportunity to develop your knowledge of temporary accommodation management, housing legislation and financial processes while contributing to a service focused on providing safe, suitable accommodation and achieving value for money.
If you are organised, resilient and passionate about making a difference to residents' lives, we would welcome your application.
